An elderly woman is in critical condition at a Calgary hospital after being pinned by an overhead parkade door at a northwest Calgary condo complex Tuesday morning.

At about 8:15 a.m., emergency crews were called to Riverside Towers on Point McKay Crescent, just east of the intersection of Bowness Road and Shaganappi Trail N.W.

Fire crews arrived to find the woman in her 70s on the ground, pinned beneath the complex’s parkade door.

“They used the spreaders on the engine to lift the garage door and remove the lady from that position,” said Mike King, acting battalion chief for the Calgary Fire Department.

Firefighters began CPR when they realized the woman wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse. The woman was then transferred to the care of EMS and rushed to Foothills Hospital, where she remained in critical, life-threatening condition Tuesday evening, surrounded by her family.

Circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation.

Members of the city’s building safety response teams are also investigating.

“We would want to check just what had occurred, were there any issues with the equipment, things like that,” said Dennis Terhove, a supervisor with the safety response unit. “We just want to make sure that everything was functioning, or not functioning, and make some determinations from that.”
