    A surge in burglaries in Calgary has police once again delivering a simple message — lock it or lose it.

    There has been a 51 per cent increase in break-and-enter activity in the first seven months of this year compared with the five-year average, Sgt. Doug Crippen of the Calgary police break-and-enter team said.

    “What we’re seeing is people have (left) their garage doors open when they pulled their vehicles into attached garages, but they’ve also left that person a door open between their garage and the home,” said Crippen. “Offenders will drive by, see it’s an unlocked residence and proceed into the home to locate property, keys, keys for that vehicle, then take that vehicle.”

    Criminals are becoming more daring in their hunt for property, which Crippen said is largely fuelled by addiction and the drug trade. Some thieves have begun conducting more break-ins at night while residents are home, even going so far as climbing up three to four floors on balconies to gain access through unlocked patio doors.

    “We’re starting to see these more concerning events where we’re seeing offenders interacting with homeowners and that for us is somewhat distressing,” said Crippen. “We don’t want that to ever happen.”
