How to reattach garage door chain

Now that we know what purpose these garage door chains serve, it is now time to get back to the main topic at hand.

How exactly can you reattach your garage door chain?

Well, reattaching your garage door opener’s chain can be easy to do but it requires a lot of effort and patience.

However, as long as you put your focus and mind into it, you should do just fine.

Without further ado, here are the different steps you need to follow if you want to reattach your garage door’s chain without any problems.

#1 Disconnecting your opener from your overhead garage door

The very first thing that you need to do is to disengage your garage door and your garage door opener.

You can do this by pulling on the emergency release cord in order to release your door’s trolley from your opener’s carriage.

Now, remember to make sure that your doors are completely closed before you do this in order to prevent unwanted accidents and injury.

If not careful, you might end up having your doors suddenly closing on you and that is one thing you surely do not want to happen, right?

Once the door is closed, you may now proceed to disconnect your overhead garage doors from your garage door openers.

After disengaging your garage door openers, make sure to unplug them as well from the power source before proceeding to the following steps.

#2 Loosening your garage door’s chain

Using a ladder, locate your garage door’s chain sprocket.

Once done, move to the end of the tracks and locate the anchor that runs through your opener’s carriage and is connected to one end of your garage door chain.

You should be able to find one or two nuts on each side of the anchor.

Make sure you loosen these nuts using a 7/16-inch wrench.

By doing so, you should be able to loosen your garage door’s chain and give you enough slack to place the chain back over the sprockets.

#3 Attaching the chains to your sprocket

Place your garage door chains around your front sprocket on the rail.

Once done, pull the chain towards the door and hold it in position.

Tighten the nuts facing the door until it meets the brackets then release the chain from your grasp.

Press down on the chain using your finger and see if you have approximately ½ inch of slack in the chain.

Once everything is set properly, adjust the chain by tightening or loosening it using the nuts.

Just make sure not to overtighten your chain as this can strain your chain unnecessarily during operation.

#4 Checking your garage door’s functionality

Reinstall your chain’s sprocket cover which you previously removed.

After reattaching your sprocket’s cover, all that is there left to do is reconnect the opener to your door and plugging it into the power source.

Once done, make sure to test the functionality of your overhead garage doors to make sure that there aren’t any problems with the repairs.

Then, you may proceed to readjust your opener’s different settings accordingly if needed.

Learning how to reattach garage door chains is not something you can easily do just after studying it once or twice.

It requires practical experience, effort, and focus in order to accomplish it properly.

As long as you are dedicated to doing so, you should be able to properly do it without any problems or issues.

You can even refer to a lot of video tutorials online to help you better understand the process.
