steel garage doors pros and cons

Garage Doors don’t start and end with a remote only.

The weight of a garage door is offset by garage door springs.

It helps to open and close quickly either by hand or by an automatic garage door opener.

Using the garage door frequently will wear out the garage door parts, especially the garage door springs.

There is a short lifetime for the high-tension steel in the springs, and it will lose its efficiency over time.

Choosing Between Amateur Or Professional to Install It

Seeking a garage door technician for repair can be costly, unlike having to DIY.

DIY fixes can save a few bucks, while having a professional do it will protect amateur installers from injuries and hazards, especially those less experienced in installing overhead garage door springs.

Knowing the Type of Spring Needed

First, it is essential to verify the type of spring before attempting to repair it.

Torsion springs are the heavy-duty springs that are mounted directly above the door opening on the metal rod parallel to the overhead door.

Long, lighter-weight springs running perpendicular to the door and are placed over the horizontal portions of the door tracks are extension springs.

Learn how to repair overhead garage doors springs with these provided instructions and tips for do-it-yourself garage door owners and maintenance service repair workers.

Steps in Replacing an Extension Spring

    1. Start it with opening the garage door.
    2. To detach the garage door opener, unhook the spring tension and put the clamp in place.
    3. Use a piece of tape to mark the place of the pulley for reinstalling it later.
    4. Disconnect the threaded safety cable from the bracket to remove the damaged and old spring.
    5. Buy a brand new spring that corresponds to the old spring.
    6. They have been color-coded with a repeating pattern for extension springs, which shows the amount of weight they can lift.
    7. Thread the safety cable through the new spring and connect the track bracket to the spring.
    8. Use the piece of tape used as a mark to ensure the right placement of the pulley before reattaching the safety cable and the pulley.
    9. Make sure the pulley wire is kept away from the safety cable.
    10. After removing the clamps and connecting the garage door, test the garage door to see if the replacement worked.
    11. Make adjustments if necessary.

    Steps in Replacing Torsion Spring

    1. Disassemble the opener and clamp the garage door to the track.
    2. Put a winding bar into the winding cone to hold the spring in place.
    3. Push the winding bar up in one-quarter turn and bring it back down to test the force.
    4. If satisfied with the amount of force, loosen the screw set. To prevent a potential injury, keep one bar in the cone at all times.
    5. Insert the second winding bar by lowering the winding bar to the peak of the garage door.
    6. Start by removing the first winding bar and lower the second bar to the garage door’s tip, then position the next hole with the first winding bar.
    7. Repeat the process until the spring is completely detached.
    8. Unscrew and detach the torsion hardware that secures the spring bracket to the middle stationary torsion cones.
    9. After removing the springs, cables, and cable drums, measure the size of the wire inside the spring’s diameter, its spring length, and determine its winding orientation.
    10. Buy a new spring that is exactly like the old spring.
    11. Insert the new left spring onto the torsion tube while the center bracket is faced by a stationary cone.
    12. Insert the cable drum.
    13. Slide the new right spring, and the central bearing then tighten the cones.
    14. After threading and securing the cables and drums, make sure the tension is equal on both sides of the door to prevent it from having a dented opening.
    15. Start winding the spring in a different direction by using the winding bars.
    16. Wind the spring in as many turns as the manufacturer suggests.
    17. Tap the winding bar to stretch the spring about one-fourth inch using a hammer, then tighten the screw set in the winding cone.
    18. Remove the clamp after lubricating the spring with the overhead door lubricant.
    19. Test the spring by lifting the door about 3 feet.
    20. Make adjustments if necessary.

Consult a Licensed Garage Door Company

If these instructions are not enough, it is advised to ask for help from a garage door repair company to ensure the proper installation of springs and prevent potential hazards and injuries.
