How To Replace A Garage Door Weather-strip – The garage door is the most important part of the garage, keeping all the valuable items in and keeping everything else out.
This means that it is essential to keep the garage door regularly well maintained.
One part of the garage door that should be frequently inspected is the garage door weather-strip.
Over time, the garage door’s weather-strip gradually deteriorates because of the changing weather.
This can be a problem, as things that shouldn’t be in the garage end up inside because of the damaged weather-strip.
With these simple to follow steps we’ve prepared, any homeowner can replace their own weather-stripping.
1. Remove the Old Weather-strip
In order to comfortably reach the bottom of the garage door and replace the garage door’s Weather-strip, lift the garage door to about five to six feet, or however high it is comfortable for the homeowner to work on the Weather-strip.
Through the space behind the garage door’s track, pull on the weather-strip until it’s completely off the garage door.
If the weather-stripping can’t be pulled, it can be removed using a flat pry bar.
This is especially effective with wooden garage doors.
2. Clean the Door’s Weather-strip Track
When the old weather-strip has been taken off the bottom of the garage door, the space underneath is expectedly dirty and needs to be cleaned.
The space underneath the weather-strip is called the weather-strip track, and housing the weather-strip to fit at the bottom of the overhead door is its main function.
With a steel brush or any kind of rough cleaning tool, clean the garage door’s weather-strip track.
The weather-strip track is located at the bottom of the garage door, where the weather-strip should be.
Clean out any dirt that might have built-up on the overhead door’s weather-strip track.
It is important that you clean the weather-strip track to make the new weather-strip installation easier.
3. Install the New Weather-strip
Any homeowner looking for a garage door weather-strip can rest assured that weather-strips are usually sold at the hardware stores and home improvement stores located all around Calgary.
Before installing the new overhead door weather-strip, make sure to lubricate the weather-strip with just a few drops of liquid dish soap.
This will make it easier to squeeze in the weather-stripping to the garage door’s weather-strip track.
Fit the new garage door weather-strip to the weather-strip track, pushing and pulling on the weather-strip until it is a snug fit.
Make sure that the newly installed weather-strip isn’t uneven.
Not installing the new garage door weather-strip properly can cause problems later on in the future, especially when trying to either nail the weather-strip down or use a sealant to help keep the weather-strip in place.
4. Seal the Weather-strip
There are three main ways to fasten and seal the weather-strip in place.
One way is using a sealant, another way is nailing it in place (in the case that the homeowner’s garage door is wooden), and both.
To really make sure the weather-strip stays in place, use a sealant underneath the weather-strip and clamp it against the bottom of the weather-strip track to really let it seal.
Using a galvanized roofing nail the size of about an inch, nail both ends of the rubber weather-strip.
After you’ve nailed both ends of the overhead door’s weather-strip, place a few nails in the middle of the weather-strip.
This will be the main guide, as the next step is to nail a few galvanized roofing nails every three to four inches apart.
5. Apply Weather-stripping in Between Sections
Measure the length of the garage door, and cut out garage weather-stripping into strips as long as the measurement of the length of the garage door.
Fold and insert the weather-strip strips into the sections between the doors with the “V” facing outside.
Make sure to take off the adhesive backing of the weather-strip to make it stick along the sections.
While it is fairly easy to replace the overhead door weather-stripping yourself, having it professionally done will yield much better results.
